At the moment in history we are learning about the 1950s. We were assigned to do a project on a 1950s rock and roll artist. Carla and I decided to do our on Elvis Presley, as he is THE 1950s rock and roll king! It was a lot of fun, and very interesting to learn information about Elvis that I wasn't aware of. I really enjoyed the Junior Cert Business Studies course, therefore I decided to continue it for the Leaving Cert. I also decided to do it, taking into account that I would have the opportunity to create a mini company, something I looked forward to! After lots of brainstorming, collaborating and researching I finally decided what I would do for my mini company. I first wrote down on a piece of paper all the things, services and products that I personally would like to purchase. By doing this I got a lot of inspiration as I was motivated to create a company that I would enjoy developing. Something else that gave me some inspiration was a big school ‘festival’ called Foot Fest. At my old school in Belgium we would have an annual big market and celebrations. Each section(meaning nationality of people) would have their own stands, selling products from their countries and also providing services. At Foot Fest each section would have their own football team, and the teams(each representing a country) would compete against each other. That’s a bit beside the point, but thinking about all the products and services each section sold opened my eyes to all the possibilities there are for my Mini Company! I have decided to sell candles in jars and pots(as seen in the picture above and below), with decoration and seasonal themes. I choose this idea since I think candles are lovely presents for friends and family of all ages! Also I enjoy crafts, therefore I could use this skill to decorate the candles and present them to a standard that they could be sold at. I plan to create many different sizes of candles in various jars and pots. I hope my company will be original and it will catch people’s attention. I plan to sell my product at a series of different venues, from local markets to school markets and possibly online. About a week ago I created a survey on my company for people to complete, which you can also complete by clicking here. The results prove very interesting and useful in the planning, manufacture and promotion of my product. I learned that people didn’t necessarily want an organic, or natural products, but people did like the idea of having personalized products. I discovered that most people would buy relatives and friends presents at either Christmas or Birthdays, so I will ensure to create candles that suit these events. The name of my company will be “Sophie’s Little Candle Shop”. I will promote my products using social media, hang posters around the community such as on shop notice boards and at the local societies and clubs and posters around the school and also telling people about it. As my product has quite a broad target market as candles are great presents for people of all ages and of both genders I plan to promote my product in as many places as possible. In the next few Business classes I plan to design an advertisement that will communicate important information such as the nature and purpose of my products, where and when you can buy the products, the cost and where to find out more information. I am currently working on a logo that will help my company stand out and make my product easy to identify. I will also think of a slogan to make my company even more memorable The only negative aspect to my product is that it costs a lot of time to handcraft each of these candles. Unlike some products that can be mass produced in a factory, my candles take time and effort to create.
Lastly something I must keep in mind while making, promoting and selling my product is that I must keep an account of the money I am investing into my company in order to avoid ending up with a deficit. I must not invest a large sum of money into my company, but enough to allow me to create a worthwhile product! I hope my company “Sophie’s Little Candle Shop” will be a success!!
